Projects included: Adding extensions to a recently erected church building that replaces a church destroyed in the earthquake. Building a house for one of the Haitians who works closely with our missionaries. Replacing termite eaten door frames in the hospital and clinic. Installing a roof top water tank so a resident doctor can have running water in his second floor apartment. Installing an exhaust fan in a kitchen ceiling. Repairing broken window screens. Building a screen door for a newly updated apartment. Configuring a new computer and assisting with the transition to an updated financial accounting system for the hospital and mission station. Assisting the nurses with their daily responsibilities. Providing financial assistance to: hire day workers for jobs on the mission station, supplement school teacher salaries, fund small enterprise developments, support other needed activities. Addressing various maintenance needs on the mission station. Laying block for the new guest house. Refurbishing the Ortlip Ministry Center that will be used for pastoral training and missionary respite.
Person-to-person interaction that defies adequate description include: Worshipping with Haitians and sensing their fervor in spite of the evidence of destruction around them. Playing with children at the orphanage in town. Visiting Madam Chou in her house on the saline as she cares for “cast offs” – an elderly man and a young child – in addition to her own 4 children. Preaching to a full church in a seaside village. Hearing the vision of the missionaries and recognizing the challenges they face.
Participants returned with a greater appreciation for those who serve on foreign fields, an increased awareness of the pressing needs, a sense of satisfaction from being able to meet real needs for hurting people, and a sharpened realization that God chooses to accomplish His work through us in ministering to His children.
