Wesleyan Presence

The Wesleyan Church and its predecessors have had a missionary presence in Haiti since the late 1940’s.

Presently there are 106 churches and 70 schools grouped into 4 districts throughout the country.

The Wesleyan Church of Haiti has a fairly autonomous organizational structure but struggles because of the depressed economic environment.

The Wesleyan Hospital on the island of La Gonave celebrated 50 years of ministry in the summer of 2009. The hospital is a critical component of our ministry to the people of Haiti. The nursing staff has been trained by missionary nurses from North America.

Collaboration with WISH (West Indies Self Help) provides electricity and clean water to the hospital and mission compound. WISH also provides clean water to the town of Anse-a-Galet and affords enterprise development opportunities to the people.

Currently six missionary families are ministering in Haiti fulltime:  Dan & Joy Irvine, Carl & Maya Gilles, Kris & Kory Thede, Greg & Heidi Edmonds, Beth & Barry Gould, Rod & Michelle Geiszler.  Often college students devote a semester to on-site education. Other individuals dedicate a year or two of service to help meet critical needs.

Missions Ministry Teams from across the United States and Canada often invest a week or two in ministry along side the missionaries and nationals. Team member skills span the spectrum from medical and dental professionals to mechanical and construction expertise to willing hands and feet that assist wherever needed. In the months following the devastating earthquake in January 2010, many individuals, churches, and districts have contributed funds and personnel to repair and rebuild some of the damaged churches.

Recently three new initiatives have begun.  A new, larger guesthouse is under construction on the mission station on La Gonave.  It will more that double the capacity for housing ministry teams.  Plans are being developed for a new hospital to replace the original one that has suffered irreparable damage from the earthquake.  Construction is anticipated to begin in 2013.  A newly acquired property is being refurbished for use as a pastoral training center and missionary respite.

Our missions projects are funded by a percentage of tithes and offerings in addition to specified contributions.
